Aims

​The Australian Curriculum: The Arts aims to develop students’:​

  • creativity, critical thinking, aesthetic knowledge and understanding about arts practices
  • ​knowledge and skills to imagine, observe, express, respond to and communicate ideas and perspectives in meaningful ways
  • use of available resources and materials including digital tools
  • empathy for multiple perspectives and understanding of personal, local, regional, national and global histories and traditions through the arts
  • ​engagement with the diverse and continuing cultures, arts works and practices of First Nations Australians
  • understanding of local, regional, national and global cultures, and their arts histories and traditions, through engaging with the worlds of artists, arts works, audiences and arts professions.​​​​

Structure

The Australian Curriculum: The Arts is presented in 2-year band levels from Year 1 to Year 10, with Prep being presented in a single year. ​

The Arts comprises 5 subjects:
  • ​Dance
  • Drama
  • Media Arts
  • Music
  • Visual Arts
​Content is organised under 4 interrelated strands:
  • Exploring and Responding
  • Developing Practices and Skills
  • Creating and Making
  • Presenting and Performing​

Experiences

Prep

Students use purposeful and creative play as a basis for creating and sharing arts works.

Year 1 & 2

Students participate independently or in groups to express and reflect their growing understanding of the world through different art forms. They begin to learn arts technical skills.

Year 3 & 4

Students participate independently or in groups to express and reflect their growing understanding of the world through different art forms. They further develop their technical skills in The Arts and explore how others create arts works. They explore how First Nations Australians use the arts to communicate their connection to Country/Place

Year 5 & 6

Students use subject-specific knowledge and language to describe and create arts works. They communicate ideas, perspectives and meanings in formal and informal settings.
