Student leadership

School leaders

Our student school leaders are year 6 students, elected by their peers at the end of the previous year. The students are nominated by their peers and teachers and evaluated during the year 5 leadership camp for their ability to confidently lead a group and be a respectful role model. The nominated students then prepare and present a speech to their peers and teachers and elections are then carried out.

The student school leader positions include school captain, vice school captain, sports house captains. The student leaders speak at official school events, lead their sports teams at events and carnivals and act as role models for the rest of the students.

Class leaders

As well as our school leaders, we also have class leaders that represent their class on the student council. The class leaders are elected at the start of each year and gives an opportunity for students to be able to participate in organising events such as the student disco’s, fund raising events and help decide how best to spend any money the student council raises. Over the years the student council has purchased many items to make life at Worongary State School even better for the students such as the refrigerated drinking fountains, the school lecturn and the school's honour board. In 2011 the student council assisted in purchasing 'Inquizador' the reading tree for the library.

Playground leaders

Our year 6 cohort is also invited to participate in our playground leader program. This program is a task that all of the participants love to do. Playground leaders are assigned a junior playground area to assist in with a duty teacher. Here they play with the students, whilst demonstrating responsible playground behaviour and help to demonstrate appropriate language and social skills. We believe this is a very valuable part of our school leadership program, and plays an important part in our student’s social development.
